Magento and Google Sitemaps

If your Magento store is ready for launch, you have all your products added and have followed my previous SEO tips then you are ready to submit an XML sitemap to Google.
Magento has a built in XML sitemap generator which I am going to show you how to set up. Go to 'Catalog' -> 'Google Sitemap' and add a new sitemap using the following settings:

filename: sitemap.xml
path: /

Clicking the ‘Generate’ link will create your XML sitemap file. You can verify this has worked by visiting http://www.your-site-name.com/sitemap.xml – you will see some XML code that doesn’t look too user friendly, but Google will love it.

Every time products, categories or pages are added in Magento, your sitemap will need to be re-generated. There is a tool that can automate this for you. In 'System' -> 'Configuration' -> 'Google Sitemap'
Under ‘General Settings’ set ‘Enabled’ to ‘yes’ and choose a time of day you would like this to run. Note, this will only work if you or your web hosting provider has set up the Magento Cron.

Submitting the sitemap to Google requires you to register with Webmaster Tools.
